Request for Moderator Status to combat recent string of spammers.
 

Seems they're out in force. Its getting annoying seeing them several times a day. I'm on a lot and could hit them as they show.

Next time, it might be better to PM one of the Admins to ask about this in private, instead of asking people in public who are (to put it bluntly) not relevant in deciding whether you get Mod status or not.

Well, sorry, but unfortunately, Internet message boards aren't electoral democracies. Even if they were, many of our members (including yourself) aren't old enough to vote, anyway. :D

This doesn't mean we necessarily have to ignore your opinions, just that we reserve the right to make the final decision. Also, to be clear, I'm not saying that K9870 shouldn't be a mod because I said so. If the other mods think we can use him, I will defer to their decision.

One other thing: Dealing with spammers usually involves updating our server, not increasing the number of mods.

I remember a while back Bunni said he had to get lax with the member sign up because members couldn't get verified.

Also. If you ASK to be a moderator, chances are you WON'T be a moderator. A Mod status is bestowed, not requested. Kinda like a Medal of Honor. You don't ASK FOR IT. Others assess your performance and bestow it upon you.

Why not let us vote on it if the mods and admins deem the person deserving and the situation calls for it?

You can usually trust us to recognize the need if it exists.

Also, I emailed Chris about the spammer problem. I'll consult with him on the best solution, whether it be more moderators, or something else. If we do decide on more mods, then we can start discussing candidates for the position.

While the scale of achievement may be WAY off, a Medal of Honor isn't an inappropriate comparison. I've nominated and signed off on a number of mods/admins over the years (including our three most recent staff appointees). None of them asked me, or campaigned in public. I just recognized that they had done a LOT of work on the site and seemed like good, reliable folks. At the time, we also needed more people on the staff due to the higher volume of edits/forum postings. So I nominated them.

Regarding the Medal of Honor: When SSgt. Salvatore Giunta (of 173rd Airborne) was decorated recently, did he ask his CO for the recommendation? I think not. Even now, he's still tried to be as humble about it as possible. I'd kinda like to see future IMFDB prospective staff members demonstrate the same values.

For future reference who would I message, any Moderator? And spammers I could at least delete the and clear up the message boards to make them more enjoyable to use. Report their accounts to someone who can restore server. I could just do some good damage control and help keep things running smooth.

Being that right now there is no MOD subtitle for the moderators, the presense of an Avatar is the only way to tell.
