P90 demo in Stargate

One of my favorite scenes for a while in Stargate was the demo in an episode when compared to the energy staff weapons the Jaffa use. It always gives me a chuckle that a so called advanced race of people would use advanced technology in a weapon design that is very archaic. On a tech standpoint, the energy weapon has almost unlimited ammo, it goes through the standard bulletproof vests Marines wear like nothing, but it is extremely inaccurate because the weapon comes out of a staff and there is no real way to aim the weapon. If such a tech was designed on a rifle with iron sights, then it would work.

Thats the point, if they used rifles then they wouldn't look as tribal.

Rockwolf66 09-21-2010 03:49 AM

I liked that scene even though the P90 shouldn't be able to saw a log in half.

Excalibur 09-21-2010 12:46 PM

And the P90's effective range is not 5 times that log either.

Nyles 09-21-2010 10:15 PM

Well, the weapon would not be fired accurately, but the rounds could still inflict casualties.

k9870 09-21-2010 11:56 PM

Well, if they need long range weapons it just gets built into script, like "hey we have a g36k for some reason although its usually a p90."

Excalibur 09-22-2010 01:24 AM

Or, "Hey, we've got M16s, SAWs, sniper rifles, MP5s, and shotguns, but we just loving plugging how awesome the P90 is"

I'd bet that they were really expensive for the armorer to obtain, and he purchased a bunch in anticipation of them being the next big thing. And when that didn't pan out, along came Stargate and he milked it for all it was worth.

k9870 09-22-2010 03:05 PM

No, tey wanted something that looked futuristic and cool, the p90 wasnt as mainstream as it is now when they started showing it.

MT2008 09-22-2010 05:21 PM

If I recall, haven't movie armorers had a lot of trouble getting blanks for P90s? There's a story going around about how "Stargate:SG1" had to cut back on P90 use around the time of the Iraq War because the company that made the 5.7mm blanks was also a U.S. government contractor and had to shift to manufacturing 5.56x45mm (live) for the war. I can't verify this, but it's what I've read on the 'Net.

k9870 09-22-2010 08:29 PM

Well i remember the g36k and carters special carbine being more prominent for a while.

Spartan198 09-22-2010 10:54 PM

One of the best scenes in the show.

Excalibur 09-23-2010 01:51 AM

This might also explain why we haven't even seen a single P90 on Stargate Universe and there hasn't been a lot of shoot outs and more episodes with the G36Ks, M4s, and other weapons

They only used the G36 in the much later seasons and the Carter Special was only seen in like 2 episodes. I wished they had her keep that as her main weapon. Would have been a change from the P90

k9870 09-23-2010 01:40 PM

SGU has no p90s :(

Excalibur 09-23-2010 04:34 PM

The more annoying part is the post edit sound for the guns sometimes sound exactly the same!

Seriously, Stargate, a show about shooting aliens, galactic war, space battles and guns all over the place...and in SGU we only see them firing the guy in 2 maybe 3 episodes out of 20.

k9870 09-23-2010 05:44 PM

yeah i hope SGU gets more action soon, the finale was awesome with the gunfights in the ship but the rest o the season had very little action.

I was watching an atlantis rerun recently where they go to the midway station and wraith invade it, and shepherd hands his p14 to a scientist, then later is seen shooting the main wraith with it. Like he had 2 or something.

In my opinion, any man in fiction, who's named Shepard, is awesome and continuity problems be damned

Wow, killing a Wraith with a P14? That's amazing...... :D

Well, wats amazing is after it shows the rest of the people on the station and the scientist is still holding the p14 shepherd gave him earlier.

Since Shepard is the only one who carries a different handgun, only his can kill a Wraith.

Doesn't everybody else carry a 9mm? Just more proof that .45 > 9mm :D

k9870 09-24-2010 03:25 PM

The beretta has killed plenty of bad guys in it, just the .45 is cooler, especially in standoff scenes when the big old barrel is in your face.

Excalibur 09-25-2010 02:44 PM

I was hoping the new Stargate Universe have different guns that we don't see often. It is cool to see Type 97s.

k9870 09-27-2010 03:49 AM

I hope universe has more gunplay in season 2, seeign we had to wait till the last 2 of the season to get any.

k9870 09-27-2010 09:27 PM

i also noticed none of the pockets typically on their tac vests are big enough for p90 mags. Not that they reload anyway. In an atlantis episode telc and ronon grab g36s and no spare amo and shoot hundreds of rounds.

Excalibur 09-28-2010 01:01 AM

Actually in several episodes of Stargate Atlantis, there are pockets for the P90 mags and I've seen one scene where Shepard reloads his G36.

k9870 09-28-2010 01:04 AM

well atlantis they do have the pouches, sg1 they dont. And they show reloading scenes in sg1, just never show where the mag comes from.
BTW, anyone know which episode tealc dual wielded p90s?

I saw a costume guide for the SG-1 uniform that said to use the bottom pocket of the vest, or the internal map pocket. Whether this is actually canon or not I don't know. Of course, when they had MP-5s they used a drop-leg mag pouch.

Clicky!

On the dual-wielding: He does it several times.
