Call of Duty: Black Ops

Any thoughts? The newest trailer just came out.

MT2008 05-19-2010 04:04 PM

Saw the trailer on HD TV at a bar last night. It looked exciting, but I don't play games anymore. That being said, what's up with that weird-ass AR carbine?

Excalibur 05-19-2010 07:17 PM

I KNOW. I was expecting at WORSE an M733 or the sporter like in Platoon because those were shown in movies, but...the hell is this thing? It LOOKS kinda like a flat top 733 with a weird flash hider that is half way like the one a 177 would have. No brass deflector, no forward assist. A scene had it with a weird handguard. I got this all screen cap.

The flattop equivalent of the M733 is the M933 (which I believe Colt used to call the "M4 Commando"). The flash hider appears to be Vortex-style. Neither flattop receivers nor Vortex flash hiders were around in Vietnam.

Whatever. Game developers aren't always gun experts. Or, their education in guns comes entirely from the Internet or what they've seen in other games and movies. I should know; I used to collaborate on mods with those kinds of people.

S&Wshooter 05-19-2010 09:07 PM

Please tell me that this game isn't set during the Vietnam War. COD: Vietnam is supposed to be like COD 2 (serious mood, no fucktardedness like MW2)

S&Wshooter 05-19-2010 09:12 PM

Nevermind, I looked at the page- there is no way in hell it's set during 'Nam

Excalibur 05-19-2010 09:36 PM

I heard it takes place throughout the Cold War, so we'd be in Nam, Cuba, Russia and a special mission to play SAS in the Iranian embassy siege.

If it's anything like MW2, I will personally go to the infinity ward headquarters and headbutt someone so hard that it knocks them unconscious

k9870 05-19-2010 10:42 PM

isnt this one treyarch?

Excalibur 05-20-2010 12:31 AM

Yes it so, so let's hope Treyarch does a better job with this project unlike World at War, where they just straight up "borrowed" the COD4 engine and used it to make cool "fire effects". I wonder how much money are they going to waste on famous actors to voice like WaW had Gary Oldman and Kiefer Sutherland

k9870 05-20-2010 12:51 AM

I thought WAW had better recoil effects, as the guns actually did jump.

Excalibur 05-21-2010 03:34 PM

I guess that's one thing that game got right.

Bugabear 05-22-2010 02:02 AM

I'm guessing you guys noticed the Aug's and SPAS's. So that means it takes place during the 80's? But the're parts when it takes place during the Vietnam war. So maybe there's going to be a bunch of flashbacks? And I think you're going to be part of the Delta Force. And anybody else excited that you can fly a SR-71?

And if you're worried about the graphics being crap thats because they are, but they're going to get better. Treyarch is extremely far behind schedule. So far behind, they had to get another studio to develop the maps.

Interesting Fact: my parents used to be friends with a guy who flew SR-71's and my uncle helped assemble one of the first of them

Excalibur 05-22-2010 02:32 AM

Refresh my memory. What was the purpose of the SR-71? Besides being a very fast plane.

k9870 05-22-2010 02:52 AM

believe it was loaded with cameras and sensors and used as a spy plane

Bugabear 05-23-2010 01:15 AM

It was also high altitude and moved extremely fast.

Your uncle was very lucky.

Excalibur 05-23-2010 04:49 PM

I wonder what else are they going to toss into this game.

Bugabear 05-23-2010 07:24 PM

Crossbows and shotgun ammo that makes you burst into flames. And no commando perk. And best of all dedicated servers. No more stupid matchmaking.

Spartan198 05-27-2010 01:29 AM

You also get to play gunner in a Cobra gunship.

On the topic of SR-71, I got to sit in the cockpit of the one at Castle Air Museum once.

Bugabear 05-29-2010 08:08 PM

Here's a nice shot of that AR you guys were so interested in. It's at the bottom.

Spartan198 05-29-2010 09:29 PM

What is that, a miniature FAL mag?

http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets...f10j2-1000.jpg

But at least we know now that this specific character is a CIA agent.

Excalibur 05-29-2010 09:50 PM

If I didnt know any better, it looks like an M4 but without a brass deflector and a forward assist. The barrel sure is almost long enough

Spartan198 05-29-2010 11:45 PM

No fencing around the mag release either.

Excalibur 05-30-2010 03:40 AM

No step down on the barrel for it to accept an M203 either.

Spartan198 05-30-2010 04:26 AM

The barrel looks to be about 11.5 - 12 inches to me, too short for an M203 (unless you were to use an Israeli mount).

Rockwolf66 05-30-2010 06:25 AM

Sorry to tell you Spartan but the XM177 with the 11.5" barrel can take an un modified M203. Read up on Special forces from the Vietnam era and look closely at the weapons and gear that they carried. heck the first time i saw an Xm177 it was a photo from the Philipines and a rebel was armed with an XM177/M203 combo and the guy watching his back had a full auto M14.

I believe I know exactly what pic you are talking about

Excalibur 05-30-2010 03:52 PM

Please find that pic.

It's in one of my firearms recognition books and I don't have a scanner

Spartan198 05-30-2010 08:57 PM

Yeah, you're right, it can. And I should know that. Serious brain fart for me there... :(

Excalibur 06-01-2010 03:12 AM

Reading an article about this, I was reading that the developers mention the Dragon Breath shotgun shell ammo. This made me think of the need to set someone on fire with a shotgun shell? If you shoot a man at point blank range with a shotgun, he's pretty much screwed. It seems a bit like Bioshock, the explosive ammo in that game works like that, or the Inferno ammo in Mass Effect 2. I just think these guys wants to show off their "fire" CGI effects like they keep advertising in WaW.

It also stated that if you are wondering if the flame ammo for the shotgun is historically accurate. They say anything goes with these special forces guys and they'd get better equipment. So to translate that, I'm sure Treyarch just pulled the Dragon breath shotgun shell out of their asses because in a war movie, we just need more fire effects.

I have a better translation: "We're SOF, so we aren't restricted by the laws of reality..."

:p

More like "We're game developers, WE aren't restricted by the laws of realism"

Swordfish941 06-01-2010 05:14 PM

I just hope they have my two favorite guns in the game: the Heckler & Koch G3A3 rifle and the Uzi. I can't believe they're going use Cuba as a level. We got our asses kicked during the Bay of Pigs invasion!

S&Wshooter 06-01-2010 05:20 PM

My fingers are crossed for an FAL and at least one or two useful S&W's

k9870 06-01-2010 09:08 PM

The Cubans suffered much higher casualties, they just won by the end of the battle.

So it was pretty much "we would have won, but we just didn't kill enough of them"?

Bugabear 06-02-2010 03:13 AM

I want an Uzi, CZ 75, and one of those folding submachine guns. But the last two probably wont come. They better have a larger sniper selection. And a really awesome sniping mission.

k9870 06-02-2010 03:14 AM

One of the modified sweedish ks with the integral supressor would be cool
