Yeah i used to love Clancy books but t was more that i loved military themed anything, books, video games, movies. the books lost appeal to me, especially now where he doesnt even write his own novels and just slaps his name on it.

As to complaining about justin beiber, rebecca black, etc, i say people should shut up. The only reason they are taken seriously is because of complaints, think "Frday" would've got a hundred million views if every blog in the world didnt comlain? No, people would see it, go "well that sucked" then move the hell on.

I feel like going to a neo-nazi forum to troll the shit out of it.

Also, what does one have to do to have their name slapped on books written by others?

I'd say that in that case, the trolling is mostly just redundant, not useful...kinda like bitching about stuff teenage girls like on the internetz.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :D

Clancy has a big name from all his fame. So, it sells books. Little guys starting out, dont have the press or fame. So they write a book, tom clancy has the title be something like:

(really small print) from
TOM CLANCY (huge print)
Title
(all in small print)written by:author

Just the fact she knew all these different varients (my dad was lost for most of this conversation) was pretty impressive. I may be turning 18 this month, but I admit I checked for a ring. Which was MIA. Not that I made any investment there, but the gun love gave me some older woman fever. :)

I think you just need to move to the South. Down here, it's much easier to find women who shoot. On any given Saturday, my range has lots of them. The problems (for me) are that they're almost always with men (their husbands, boyfriends, or fathers), and that they tend to be trashy and religious (totally not my type).

EDIT: Also, you don't need to go for the older women down here, either. A lot of the girls I've seen at my range are closer to your age and mine (late teens to mid-20s).

The word you're looking for here is "brand name." You know, like how Samuel Colt doesn't design modern Colts due the the minor inconvenience of having been dead for a hundred and forty nine years.

The only problem with this comparison is that Tom Clancy isn't dead. And the guns that have borne Samuel Colt's name since his death haven't been nearly as shitty as the novels that have been marketed under Tom Clancy's name.

Me? In Cali? Yeah, right. You must be confusing me with BurtReynoldsMoustache or any of the armorers on IMFDB (MPM2008, for example).

I live in North Carolina. I think I also told you that I went to college in Maine, and I was in Texas for a year, too.

Well then you could say that on the contrary, Clancy's been dead since (insert name of the last Clancy novel you liked)

Yes, although I'm actually not sure I should have ever mentioned that, even though I'm not there anymore (and even though I'm obviously not the only Matt who went there).

Spartan198 06-15-2011 08:43 PM

My dad was an extra in Into The Wild.

Were not gonna be able to find out your real identity from that. Even if i did i wouldn't do anything with it.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, it's not like Tom Clancy's novels (even his "classics", like The Hunt for Red October) have ever been high art to begin with. He's like the Hi-Point or Intratec of his trade.

But I still think it says a lot about his artistic integrity that he's willing to whore out his own name to third-rate authors' work.

When you become a sellout, you lose your dignity (which is why I am never selling out).

(1.) I hate to be cynical, but unless you are exceptionally talented (or, as in Tom Clancy's case, exceptionally good at appealing to a certain audience), your writing is probably going to have to remain a hobby rather than a career.

(2.) Unless you have lots of money already, of course you're going to "sell out" if given the opportunity to make millions from your work. It's a matter of the degree to which you'll sell out, not whether you'll do it.

Also, I don't despise Tom Clancy for being successful as a novelist (even if he's a poor writer); I just respect him less for making himself into a franchise after he already became successful.

Like Matt said, if you're choosing between your own pride and making a metric f*ckton of money, you'll probably sell out.

Makes me think of that guy from Youtube who sang Chocolate Rain. He was given a record deal, and published Cherry Chocolate Rain, and suddenly everyone said he was a sellout. God forbid somebody does something to make money after catching a big break.

Put yourself in Clancy's shoes. "Hmm, I'm making a lot of money to publish subpar military thrillers (and making movie deals off of some of them), but I'm getting older and running out of ideas... how awesome would it be if I could make even MORE money by slapping my name on video game and 3rd rate authors' novels?..."

Reach is right. Back to Randomness.

Anyway, I've decided to watch all of the episodes of the revived Doctor Who series while my two brothers are away at summer camp. I'm now watching the episode where the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) meets his greatest. the Dalek.

We were starting to talk about selling out, more than Tom Clancy per se.

Also, you can still talk about other random stuff. Nobody's stopping you.

BeardedHoplite 06-16-2011 12:58 AM

Huh, it appears the nazi/fundies have found out about my little idea, as my account is no longer there. I'm suprised, it only took five or-so hours.

Anyhoo, anybody ever see the Hanzo the Razor flicks on IFC?

This all began with me saying that Twilight-bashing is stupid. It's like beating a dead horse. And that horse is decayed and smells with flies buzzing around it. I like the actors' others work (especially Kristen Stewart).

Well, when you registered under that name on that website, one doesn't need to be a genius to figure out what's going to happen. What you should have done was set up everything you wanted to post so it was ready to go, *then* make the account and post it.

You basically told them what you were going to do and gave them time to cut you off.

I went back to Collectors, saw they had a Gyrojet pistol, held a 645 (which I have added to my "to buy" list)

Earlier on, I went to a nearby gunstore, fondled a CZ97B (also added to the list) and snagged a job application for when I turn 18
