SPEMack618 11-07-2012 10:15 PM

The ultimate twist ending at the end could be you kill some UNITA cell lader who you previously fought alongside in one of the beginning missions.

Oy, R-4s, SLRs, Browning Hi-Powers, the jungle mod to the Browning A5, maybe even a BREN gun.

It's UNITA, not ANITA. Also, would it really be all that politically incorrect? Savimbi was an opportunist and a con artist who started out as a disciple of Mao Zedong, and then cozied up to the apartheid South African regime and Washington's neo-conservatives when he realized he could gain greater international legitimacy (and money) by making himself into an anti-communist. When the Angolan government hired Executive Outcomes to help them fight UNITA in the 1990s, I don't think too many liberals felt much sympathy for Savimbi and his forces, regardless of how much they loathed the ex-SADF guys who made up EO's leadership. (note that I am assuming you associated political correctness with liberalism; forgive me if I am mistaken)

SPEMack618 11-08-2012 01:33 AM

Oops. Typo.

No, Savimbi was goon, a somewhat usable goon, but a goon none the less. I was more referring to the glorification of the SADF and the Apartheid (sp) era regime.

In essence, I don't see how a video game maker could make the SADF the good guys.

Heck, even Larry Bond and Barrett Tillman waffled on making them the good guys and those dudes make Barry Goldwater look moderate.

Ah, I gotcha. Yes, it would be quite politically incorrect to feature the apartheid-era SADF as the heroes. EO might be a little more of a gray area, though.

Also, before the end of the Cold War, the SADF would be fighting the MPLA. UNITA received training and even close air support from the SADF before the end of the Cold War (and also the end of apartheid).

Markit 11-08-2012 02:31 AM

Speaking of which, if anyone has seen the leaked playthrough of Black Ops II, it is quite the historical role reversal to have UNITA equipped and fighting like the SADF (down to having the Buffel MRAPs and Eland armored cars) while the MPLA are reduced to a bunch of machete-wielding maniacs with technicals when they had plenty of armor and aircraft themselves.

Swordfish941 11-08-2012 04:11 AM

This is hilarious (at least in my opinion it is):

And didn't EO, composed of a lot of South African ex-pats, wind up fighting against UNITA?

That was the "twist" I was getting at, but I could be confused. That whole situation is murky to say the best, and Lt. Col. Brown doesn't exactly provide the best picture of it. ;)

I'm starting to get a little bit tired of people I know talking about "Act of Valor" like it's the most realistic war movie ever, just because it stars active-duty Navy SEALs. There are way too many obvious instances where the movie sacrifices realism for entertainment. Apparently, people truly believe that a movie made with cooperation from DoD and the SEAL teams would never dare abstain from being 100% realistic all the time. After all, if the military supports it, their goal must be accuracy, rather than duping teenage boys into enlisting.

Honestly, if I hadn't known that "Act of Valor" starred real SEALs, it would have seemed like a pretty average military-themed action movie to me.

I agree; it was alright, not great

SPEMack618 11-11-2012 05:22 PM

I enjoyed it immensly but I recogonize that it's not winning any Oscars.

Happy Veterans Day everyone!

I had one of those surreal moments today...woke up, walked down stairs and was making coffee and one my fratenity brothers asked if I was gonna watch the Falcons game and I replied of course and he chuckled and went to leave for the library as we walked out the front door, he stopped, turned to me and said "Hey Mack, thanks." And left before I could formulate a response.

I liked it, and I personally thought that the SEALs weren't half-bad actors, but the movie itself was not what one could call "great"

SPEMack618 11-11-2012 09:12 PM

I really, really hate New Orleans. I really hate the Saints, I hate the Superdome, and I hate the fact that I missed the homecoming dance my senior year of high school because some idiot though building a city below sea level was a good idea and some bigger idiots were too stupid to leave in the face of a category five hurricance.

Screw the saints.

S&Wshooter 11-12-2012 01:07 AM

This morning, I learned that my father's Uncle Zach was part of the 101st Airborne Division, and was present during the seige of Bastogne.

SPEMack618 11-12-2012 02:16 PM

That's cool, I had a Great Uncle, so was sort of a surrogate great-grandfather, who rode on the back of the fourth tank in the column commanded by then Colonel Abrams thatrelieved Bastonge.

SPEMack618 11-13-2012 01:18 AM

Minor annoyance of the day:

Four toothbrushes are entirely too many for one bathroom. (Girlfriend, Mine, Roomate, Roomate's Girlfried) Especially when I've just gotten out of the shower and my classes are fogged up.

Major annoyance of th day;

Finding roomate's girlfriends panties hanging on your towel hook.

So... discuss.

The Wierd It 11-13-2012 07:15 PM

If I hadn't seen it in other, less... reactionary news outlets I'd write it off as Fox News being sensationalist.

But given the other crap that's come out of the "OMG There's still a black guy in the big chair despite everything we were taught about black people being inferior to white people" crowd, this does not surprise me.

In short, it's a load of "how dare the country vote in a way that's not what I wanted".

Although the fightback has apparently already started.

SPEMack618 11-13-2012 10:41 PM

I feel all this angst over "secession" could better be directed towards having proportional representation of electoral votes...like Nebraska and Maine do.

As one of my fraternity brothers put it...."California and thier 55 votes can go fall off into the pacific."

I am sooooo tired of hearing about Petraeus' affair already. Who gives a shit? The man is one of the best officers of his generation, and it's absurd to me that Americans care more about his extramarital affairs than his professional competency. It makes me kinda ashamed to even be an American.

I really doubt it has to do with him being black or white people being "superior", at least for most people. I know it certainly doesn't me (not that I've signed the California petition anyway). And those still stuck on his skin color need to realize racism is severely outdated. I think it's a matter of people not getting heard and this seems to them to apparently be the only way to be heard.

That petition to strip petition signers of citizenship and exile them is far more un-American than any attempt to secede is, since it basically wants people punished for not falling in line with an administration whose policies they disagree with and have the right to protest.

Oh, I agree completely. I could understand if he coerced her into it, but it was a mutually-consensual relationship between two adults.

SPEMack618 11-14-2012 08:18 PM

Gentleman, not to indulge in the tin foil hattery so prevalent, atleast in th view of the media amongst consrvative gun owners, but allow me, if you will to put on my Dale Gribble hat, which actually I am wearing my "MACK" truck hat today, so it fits.

Between General Ham resigning, Admiral Gaouett being "reasigned", the resignation of Director Petraeus, and the resignation of ScDef Panetta, all coinciding to occur post election, I can't shake the feeling that something is amiss. Just saying.

k9870 11-15-2012 02:46 AM

Holder knew about the affair for weeks, waited till after election to move in case news affected obamas reelection.

Obama wants petraeus discredited, since petraeus will tell the truth on beghazi, and it will not look good for Obummer.

The whole thing is rotten. I know a CIA director cant have an affair, as its potential blackmail material to someone who has access to national secrets, but theres something else going on.

SPEMack618 11-15-2012 10:36 PM

just got off the phone with my mother....

Mom:"Your order from Cabela's came today." [three cases of steel shot for duck season]
Me: "Great. What did you do with it?"
Mom:"Put it in your room. Oh, you need to move it when you get home."
Me: "Why?"
Mom: "Katherine[my big sister]tripped over it today."
Me: "Why was she in my room?"
Mom: "Oh, she's using it as an office now."
Me:

I couldn't ever work that out either. I tried smaller than requested sizes and resolutions and various file types and couldn't get it to work so gave up in the end. My guess is that it has either been disabled or the feature has broken during a software update. Anyone else unable to upload or change their avatar?

Spartan198 11-21-2012 12:27 AM

After what you guys are saying, I don't want to even try to change it and end up not being able to get it back.

In other news, Comcast Cable blew out the HDMI jacks on my TV and won't pay to replace it. All they keep saying is that the problem "predates installation" of their hardware, when it most definitely did not. If they weren't our only TV service option here at the new apt., we'd have given them the boot.

How the hell can that happen, a lightning strike nearby or something?

I don't mean they literally blew out, neither of them will work anymore. Both jacks worked fine before the move, but when Comcast came out to hook up our TV service, I only get a picture for about a split second before the screen goes black. Audio is fine. I've tried multiple HDMI cables in both ports to no avail.

Their online help forum had a thread about certain DVR boxes messing up TVs, so it's not just me.
