I do buy legal copies of movies I like, but there are a LOT of bad movies that I really don't think deserves my money.

Well even if the director and screenwriter do a shitty job of making a film, that doesn't mean the people who aren't millionares who worked on it don't deserve their cut of the profits.

Those guys get paid buy the studios already. The writers don't get the big bucks if the movie is successful or not. Depends on the contracts, which usually aren't that much anyway. If you are trying to say that me not paying for a movie won't get the film crew paid, that isn't true. They already got their money for whatever work.

And blaming the decline in good movies or production value on pirates is a poor excuse when pirating movies isn't the actual problem here

Billions are lost due to pirates all over the world. Sorry that excuse doesn't fly. Especially for those who hear first hand how the studios and even indie projects are suffering.

I knew an indie film project that already had some pirate version available on Torrent BEFORE they could release their DVD. That's Bullshit.

My view of you is plummeting by the second :(

Then don't WATCH them.

Or you can watch with friends who legally rent or buy the movie. Or even borrow the movie from a friend who got it from NETFLIX.

But to patronize any ILLEGAL market of bootleg movies is just wrong. It helps the pirates and hurts the industry. The fact that you're watching a movie which is still in theaters smacks of serious piratry. And it is seriously frowned upon by the industry (and it's lawyers).

What difference does it make to watch a movie for free if you weren't going to pay for it anyway?

WTF? What planet do you live on POI? Your statement implies that 'downloading or acquiring a bootleg movie' is the same as NOT watching it at all since in both cases you're not paying for the service.

That's like stealing fruit from a fruit stand and not eating fruit at all being equated as being the same thing. The concept makes NO SENSE.

Why do we spend so much time arguing against your bizarre posts?

Actually it's not at all like stealing a physical object. If I steal an apple from a store, the store loses any profit it would have made from selling the apple, in addition to the initial investment put into acquiring and displaying the apple. If I do not steal the apple, they can still recoup their investment and make a profitable return by selling the apple to somebody else.

If I pirate a movie, yes the studio loses the money they would have made had I purchased a ticket instead. But if it's a movie I wasn't going to pay money to see anyway, such as Meet The Spartans, then the lost profit has nothing to do with my piracy. Wether I pirate the movie, or just don't watch it at all, either way I'm still not paying the studio any money. They lose out either way because they made a horrible product. Additionally, me pirating the movie has no bearing on whether or not other people have the option to pay money to view the movie. If I steal the apple, that's one less apple the store can sell. If I pirate a movie, I'm not preventing anybody else from viewing the movie, the supply of viewings is not limited.

And on top of that, the studio takes no additional loss from delivering the movie to me. They spent no time or resources putting it up online for me to view. It doesn't cost them anything in hosting or bandwidth. This is in contrast to the apple, the cost of which goes beyond simply growing and transporting it, and is increased in terms of employee hours and available shelf space.

You're trying to say that bootlegging a movie, even if it is HIGH QUALITY from a DVD is not the same as stealing an apple. It's exactly the same.

I admit, I have gotten free movies through the typical means before, but I know it's wrong. You are trying to say it isn't wrong and that no one losses money over it.

And even if one person stops downloading, it won't stop the people who bootlegs and distributes the pirated movie. Apparently there is no such thing as "set a good example" online because no one listens to good conscience.

MT2008 08-27-2010 12:43 AM

Honestly, I don't give a damn about the debate on bootlegging. I just don't want anybody talking about doing that stuff on here. Or at least, save it for another topic in the "Off Topic" forum.
