They know I'm running out of HD space on my PS3?

Heh, I've got a 40 gig model, running out of space is its default state.

I'm torn between buying and installing a 500 GB drive and my saved game data...

I need to find that 120 Gig HD for my 360 so I can do a HD transfer and use it instead of the 24 Gig I've been using since I got the Xbox

Your controller ports are USB, you can plug in any FAT32 formatted portable drive and save from your PS3 to it. The only snag is some games lock their saves to the machine, which might mean you lose them on transfer; not sure if that happens when you do it to the same console, but I know people have lost Bayonetta saves after transferring to replacement consoles.

Also, make sure you measure the drive bay and compare to your replacement drive, some larger laptop HDs are bigger than the PS3's drive bay.
