If you think the SIG 556 is heavy for a .223 rifle, the Galil is heavier.

Not really. The Galil's weight is a little more spread out than that of the 556, which has all of it's weight in the very front. I recently handled a 556, and it's weight distribution suprisingly reminded me of a Polish "RPK" knockoff that I had held sometime earlier in the year

FALs are nice, only shot a DSA but then again they dominate the market. Id like something more optics friendly though, since my vision sucks. Contacts shift a bit making precision shooting tough. I bet there are good FAL mounts, i just didn't see any on the gun i shot. Maybe a top rail would be nice.

The sig doesn't feel unbalanced to me weigth wise, i just hate the folding stocks (too short.) A collapsible stock version may fit well.

Not really, Galils have almost the opposite problem - a lot of the weight is more towards the rear. Especially with the stock folded (though of course, that's not how anyone shoots it).

It's not a bad rifle, but there is a good reason that the IDF ditched it and went AR.

Don't they make FAL's with rails?

Excalibur 12-24-2009 06:00 AM

They make anything with rails nowadays

Ok, I've held an M1A and it is way heavier than a basic AR-15.

S&Wshooter 12-24-2009 06:24 AM

What kind of AR are you talking about? One made of depleted Uranium (super heavy) with hardwood furniture? There is no way that a normal AR weighs more than a M1A

M1As are around 11-12 pounds empty, An M16A2 is a little under 9 with a loaded magazine. I don't think 9 is 12 hehehe.
